Women’s History Month  is celebrated globally in March, it is a time to recognise women's contributions to society and to advocate for gender equality.

The National Women’s History Alliance selects and publishes the yearly theme. The theme for Women's History Month 2025 is “Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations.”

Women's History Month started as a week-long celebration in the United States in 1981.

In 1987, Congress passed legislation that made March Women's History Month.

The month of March was chosen in part because of International Women's Day, which is celebrated on March 8th.

International Women's Day was first celebrated in 1911 by Russian women during their peace campaigns.

The United Nations chooses a theme for International Women's Day each year.

According to the International Women's Day website purple, green and white are the colours of IWD,. "Purple signifies justice and dignity. Green symbolises hope. White represents purity."
